A woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday night, ahead of Holi celebrations. The incident took place in the middle of a road after the injured woman reportedly ran out of her house seeking help.
The deceased has been identified as Sabitri Mallik of Phuleswari Basti. Bharatpur police have detained the accused husband, Purnachandra Mallik, and launched an investigation into the incident.
Argument Turns Fatal Inside House
According to reports, the couple was preparing dinner when the incident occurred between 09:30 pm and 10:00 pm. Purnachandra was reportedly chopping vegetables when the two suddenly engaged in an argument. The altercation allegedly escalated, following which he stabbed his wife.
After sustaining injuries, Sabitri reportedly ran out of the house onto the road. Local residents assisted her and rushed her to hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
Accused Detained, Probe Underway
Locals reportedly apprehended the husband and informed the police. A forensic team and officials from Bharatpur Police Station reached the spot after receiving information and initiated an inquiry.
Police said the exact motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained. However, locals stated that the couple frequently argued over the husband’s unemployment. Sabitri was reportedly employed at a restaurant beside her house, while Purnachandra was unemployed.

The couple was alone at the time of the incident and no other family members lived with them. Police have continued their investigation to determine the precise circumstances leading to the fatal assault.
