Woman arrested in Bhubaneswar for over Rs 3 crore loan fraud

Following a complaint lodged at the police station, Kaptipada Police arrested the accused. Further investigation into the case is underway.

A woman was arrested in Bhubaneswar on Saturday, in connection with fraud cases involving more than Rs 3 crore.

The accused allegedly cheated people by posing as an official of the Labour Department and promising to arrange loans.

The accused, identified as Binodini Nayak, was arrested by Kaptipada Police from the Hansapal area of the capital city. As per police sources, the woman used the promise of facilitating loans to lure victims and carried out large-scale financial fraud.

During the investigation, it was revealed that the woman used more than 30 SIM cards to execute the fraud. Binodini is a native of the Bolani police station area in Keonjhar district. Several cases have already been registered against her in different police stations.

According to police sources, she had collected more than Rs 30 lakh from residents of the Parasibadi area under Kaptipada police limits by claiming to be a Labour Department official and assuring them of loans, but failed to return the money.

Following a complaint lodged at the police station, Kaptipada Police arrested the accused. Further investigation into the case is underway.

"A woman from Bhubaneswar posed as an official of the Labour Department and collected money from several people by promising them loans. About six months ago, she duped many people in Kaptipada of around one crore rupees. She has also cheated me of around Rs 5 to Rs 7 lakh," said Santosh Kumar Pati, a complainant.

"Based on the complaint, a case was registered at Kaptipada Police Station. Acting on this, a police team arrested the woman in Bhubaneswar under the jurisdiction of Hanspal Police Station. Preliminary investigation indicates that she is involved in multiple fraud cases across Odisha. Further investigation will reveal the involvement of other persons linked to her activities," said Kaptipada police station IIC Madhusmita Mohanty.
