Two people, including a woman, died after getting electrocuted during late-night Shyama Puja celebrations at Biragobindapur village under Satyabadi police jurisdiction in Puri on Monday.
The identities of the deceased are yet to be ascertained.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred around 1 am during a Bhajan programme at the Dakshinakali Peetha in the village.
Sources said that the duo, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, approached the stage and accidentally came into contact with a live wire, sustaining severe injuries. They were initially rushed to Sakhigopal Hospital and later shifted to Puri Hospital for treatment, but succumbed to their injuries.
The bodies are reportedly kept at Puri Hospital for post-mortem. Police officials stated that the autopsy, scheduled for today, will establish the exact cause of death.
Investigators are also examining a tattoo on one of the deceased to help with identification.
The Satyabadi police have launched a detailed inquiry into the incident and are collecting information from local residents and witnesses.
The village committee head confirmed that the matter was reported promptly and that the concerned authorities are taking all necessary steps to investigate.

Police have appealed to people with information regarding the deceased to come forward to assist with identification.
The incident has cast a shadow over the village, dampening the festive spirit of Kali Puja in the region.
