Weights & measurement fraud in Odisha: 153 cases in 2 years, says Minister

A significant number of traders have been caught deceiving consumers by manipulating measurements and weights, according to the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister of Odisha, Krushna Chandra Patra. Revealing the data, the Minister revealed that 153 cases of cheating specifically related to weight and measurement have surfaced in the last two years.

Over Three Lakh Inspections Conducted

The Minister stated that 3,12,326 inspections were carried out during this period to identify irregularities. These checks aimed to ensure compliance and safeguard consumers from fraudulent practices.

More Than Ten Thousand Cases Registered

Out of these inspections, 10,756 cases were registered. While 153 cases involved cheating in measurement and weight, the remaining 10,603 cases were booked for other violations. The Minister emphasised that strict enforcement is necessary to protect consumers from unfair trade practices.

Crores Collected in Penalty

The enforcement drive led to the collection of Rs 3,11,75,000 in fines from violators. Specifically, cheating related to measurement and weight resulted in penalties totalling Rs 23,51,000. The figures highlight both the scale of violations and the government’s efforts to curb malpractice.
