VSSUT student arrested for ‘assault’ on female student in Burla

A student of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) in Burla has been arrested on charges of assaulting a female student, police said on Thursday. The accused was taken into custody after a complaint was lodged at the Burla police station alleging that he had physically assaulted the victim. 

Based on the complaint, the police registered a case and arrested the student. His bail plea was rejected, following which he was remanded to judicial custody and sent to Sambalpur Circle Jail.

The University authorities had earlier suspended the student in connection with the incident. The matter has now been handed over to the Internal Complaints Committee for further inquiry.

According to the complaint, the assault took place when the accused allegedly attacked the female student at a rented accommodation where he was staying.

Commenting on the matter, Professor Dipak Kumar Sahoo, Vice-Chancellor of VSSUT, said, “The girl and her father have lodged written complaints with the university alleging that she was tortured, and that money was demanded from her.”

“After receiving the report, we immediately suspended the male student and barred him from entering the campus, except when appearing for examinations or if called for interrogation. We have received two separate complaints from the victim and her father, and these have been handed over to the Internal Complaints Committee. The incident took place outside the campus,” he added.

Meanwhile, further Police investigation in connection with the incident is underway.
