The Odishagovernment has finalised arrangements to supply essential wedding items to beneficiaries of the Mukhya Mantri Kanya Vivah Yojana, with the state-run handicrafts and handloom cooperative Utkalika entrusted with a key role in the initiative.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Utkalika and the Women and Child Development Department in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, formalising the procurement and distribution process.

Ceremonial Items for Beneficiaries

Under the scheme, brides will receive a set of essential ceremonial items, including sarees, bangles, anklets and bindis. These materials will be sourced and distributed through Utkalika to ensure quality and uniformity in the items provided to beneficiaries across the state.

Boost to Handicrafts and Handlooms

Officials said involving Utkalika is intended not only to meet the requirements of the marriage assistance scheme but also to promote Odisha’s traditional handicraft and handloom sectors. The move is expected to generate sustained demand for locally made products and provide livelihood support to artisans associated with the cooperative.

Financial Assistance Under the Scheme

The Mukhya Mantri Kanya Vivah Yojana offers comprehensive financial assistance amounting to Rs 51,000 per beneficiary. Of this, Rs 35,000 will be transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank account seven days after marriage registration. An additional Rs 10,000 is allocated for wedding gifts, while Rs 6,000 is earmarked for decorations.

Implementation and Community Participation

Speaking on the rollout of the scheme, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida said the standard operating procedures (SOPs) have been finalised, and marriage arrangements for enlisted beneficiaries are in place. “After finalising the dates, the marriages will be conducted with the participation of society and various voluntary organisations. The district administration will oversee the implementation,” she said.

She added that marriage certificates will be issued to beneficiaries, and the Chief Minister is expected to be present at the wedding ceremonies, marking a significant step in the implementation of the flagship social welfare programme.
