Undertrial Prisoner Dies At Choudwar Jail

Cuttack: An undertrial prisoner died under suspicious circumstances at Choudwar circle jail in Cuttack. The deceased has been identified as Deb Prakash Behera of Malisahi village under Bolgarh police limits in Khurda district.

The jail authorities informed that Behera committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree inside the jail premises on Monday.

According to the complaint lodged by the jail authorities at Choudwar Police Station, Behera hung himself using a towel on the premises of the jail at around 2 pm yesterday.

Though some staff rescued him and rushed him to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, he was declared dead by the doctors.

“The UTP had attempted suicide on the jail premises. We rescued him and immediately shifted him to the hospital. However, the doctors pronounced him dead,” said Choudwar jail superintendent Rajkumar Sahu.

Meanwhile, Behera's family members have alleged that he was physically and mentally tortured inside the jail. "How can he commit suicide when the jail is under strict surveillance? He had earlier informed us about the harassment inside jail," alleged Behera's brother.
