Panic gripped Jalameripalli village in Odisha’s Ganjam district after a wild elephant trampled two persons to death on Sunday. The victims, including a woman, were attacked while they had gone to pluck vegetables from their agricultural field.
According to preliminary reports, the tusker suddenly emerged and charged at the duo, leaving them critically injured. The woman died on the spot due to severe injuries. The other victim was immediately rushed to the Digapahandi hospital for treatment.
Victim Declared Dead at Hospital
Despite efforts by doctors to save him, the injured person succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The deaths have triggered fear and tension among villagers, who expressed concern over the frequent movement of wild elephants near human settlements.

Local residents alleged that elephant movement in the area has increased in recent weeks, posing a serious threat to lives and crops.
Forest Team Launches Operation
Soon after receiving information, officials from the Bhishmagiri forest range reached the village and launched an operation to drive the tusker away from the locality. Forest personnel are monitoring the situation closely to prevent further casualties.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid venturing into fields or forest fringes alone. The operation to track and chase the elephant is currently underway.
