A serious road accident in Baripada on Sunday left two persons critically injured, triggering tension and protests in the area. The mishap occurred at Basipitha Teremail Square on the Baripada State Highway, where a motorcycle reportedly collided head-on with the vehicle of Saraskana MLA.
According to preliminary reports, the impact of the collision was severe enough to cause the MLA’s vehicle to lose balance, following which it veered off the road and crashed into a tree before coming to a halt. The two riders on the motorcycle suffered multiple injuries and were immediately rushed to Baripada District Headquarters Hospital, where they remain under critical care.

Soon after the incident, tension gripped the locality as a crowd gathered at the accident spot. Local residents, alleging negligence and demanding action, blocked the road at Teremail Square, disrupting traffic movement for some time. Police and local authorities reached the scene to pacify the protesters and clear the route.
Officials have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision, including whether speeding or lack of visibility played a role. The MLA’s office has expressed concern over the injured riders and assured cooperation with the ongoing inquiry.
“The accident occured as the MLA's vehicle collided with the motorcycle. They (victims) had gone to the market when the accident happened,” said a relative of the victims.
