Farmers in the Dharakote area of Odisha’s Ganjam district are facing severe hardship due to delays in the issuance of tokens for paddy procurement, forcing them to guard their harvested crops through cold winter nights. Although the local procurement mandi opened on December 23, the absence of tokens has stalled procurement, leaving large quantities of paddy stranded at threshing yards.
With no immediate mechanism to transport their produce to procurement centres, farmers are compelled to keep their harvest in the open. Fearing damage and losses, many cultivators are spending nights in the fields, braving cold weather and dew to protect their year-long effort.
Cold Nights and Sleepless Vigil
As winter conditions intensify, farmers are maintaining round-the-clock vigil at threshing yards due to the lack of secure storage facilities. The delay in procurement has added to their distress, forcing them to endure biting cold and sleepless nights.
“We cannot take such a huge quantity of paddy home as there is a risk of rodent damage. My brothers and I have set up temporary tents and are sleeping in the fields at night to guard the crop. If tokens had been issued on time, we would not have been forced into this situation,” said a farmer from the area.
Threats from Wildlife and Theft
In addition to harsh weather, farmers are also grappling with the threat of wildlife and theft. Wild animals frequently pass through the area, adding to their concerns.
“Elephants crossed this stretch two days ago, and wild boars come here almost every night on their way to a nearby pond. We have built a small hut and take turns—some sleep while others keep watch,” the farmer added.
Farmers Urge Swift Administrative Action
Farmers have urged the authorities to resolve the token issue at the earliest to ensure smooth and timely procurement. Another cultivator expressed frustration over repeated delays, saying, “We are told every day that tokens will be issued tomorrow, but the dates keep getting pushed. Early issuance of tokens will bring great relief.”

Until procurement begins in full, farmers in the region say they have little option but to continue guarding their paddy under harsh conditions, while hoping for immediate administrative intervention.
