Third Cadaveric Transplant In Odisha: Brain Dead Woman’s Kidneys Donated To Save Two Lives

Cuttack/Bhubaneswar: After two successful cadaveric kidney transplants in the State, two more persons struggling with renal failure are set to get a new lease of life with organ donation from a woman, who was declared brain dead by doctors.

As per reports, the 45-year-old woman identified as Rajalaxmi Das, a resident of Delanga area in Puri district was brought to Hi-Tech Medical College & Hospital in Bhubaneswar four days back after she met with an accident. However, she was declared brain dead by the doctors on Wednesday. Following the incident, her family members decided to donate her kidneys.

After the completion of the organ donation paper works, Rajalaxmi’s kidneys were harvested from her body and later transported to Cuttack SCB Medical College and Hospital for the transplantation procedure.

The kidneys will be donated to two patients- Ritarani Mahanta of Mayurbhanj and Ratnakar Mohanty of Kamakhyanagar area in Dhenkanal district.

Asked about the noble step, son of Rajalaxmi said, “I was in office when I received the news of the accident. Though she was immediately rushed to Hi-Tech Hospital, the doctors declared her brain dead during the treatment. She is my mother and I cannot express the loss. I could have conducted her last rites easily but we wanted to help people in need so that no one experiences the pain we are going through now. I want my mother to survive in others' body."

Meanwhile, Arjuna Mahanta, husband of one of the recipient Ritarani expressed his deep gratitude to the family of Rajalaxmi for saving his wife's life by donating the vital organ.

“My wife has been suffering from kidney ailments since the last two years and both her kidneys are not working. The doctors had suggested kidney transplantation as the only way to save her," Arjuna said.

Earlier in February, two cadaveric kidney transplantations were conducted in the State. In the first, the kidney of 26-year-old donor Priyankarani Patra was transplanted on Khirod Sahoo after a three-hour-long surgery at SCB Hospital in Cuttack.

In the second instance, one of the kidneys of 56-year-old brain dead Suchitra Dash was transplanted on 55-year-old Jagannath Sura at Apollo Hospital while the other organ was transplanted on another patient at AMRI hospital.
