The incident took place under the Satyabadi police limits between residents of Tentulia and Bagulapari villages. Tension reportedly flared over the conduct of puja rituals at the Narayani Temple, which is located in Tentulia village. However, residents of Bagulapari have traditionally visited the temple and performed rituals there.

According to sources, the situation escalated after some residents of Bagulapari allegedly locked the temple, leading to a heated argument between members of the two villages. The verbal altercation soon turned violent, with both groups pelting stones at each other.
