Sweeper job fraud case: Woman attempts to kill self by consuming poison over repayment demand in Sambalpur

A woman attempted to end her life by consuming poison in connection with a large-scale fraud case related to the alleged sweeper job recruitment in Odisha's Sambalpur on Saturday. She was reportedly working as a supervisor in a fake organisation that was allegedly set up to cheat aspirants seeking employment.

Two individuals, Padmavati Tandi and Rahul Ray, had reportedly established the organisation to dupe people. The woman in question, employed as a supervisor, allegedly collected money from various aspirants and handed the amount over to the accused duo. The organisation is said to have defrauded candidates of around Rs 64 lakh by promising them positions as sweepers.

Trigger Behind the Attempted Suicide

Following the arrest of the accused, people who had given money to the woman started seeking refunds. It is reported that the pressure of these demands prompted the woman to take the extreme step of consuming poison. 

The woman is currently undergoing treatment at a private nursing home in Burla, and her condition is said to be stable.

Role of the Supervisor in the Organisation

According to reports, the duo had deployed several people to collect money from aspirants by promising posts like area manager and supervisor. The woman, a housewife, allegedly had collected funds from multiple candidates and passed the money to the accused.

After their arrest, she became the target of repayment demands, which allegedly drove her to take the drastic step.

Investigation and Ongoing Case

Meanwhile, the investigation in connection with the alleged fraud is underway. However, the woman remains under medical observation as the inquiry proceeds, sources said.
