Addressing the media, the DGP said Odisha Police would adopt a “tit-for-tat” approach if extremists refuse to lay down arms. He reiterated that those who continue on the path of violence will have to face serious consequences.

Security forces have intensified combing operations in Kandhamal district, particularly in the forested areas of Daringbadi, amid suspicion that Maoist leader Shukru is hiding there. The crackdown is part of a larger anti-Maoist drive being carried out in coordination with the Centre.

The Centre has reportedly set a deadline by March for the ongoing anti-Maoist campaign. Keeping this timeline in view, security operations in Maoist-affected pockets of Odisha have been further strengthened.

The DGP appealed to Maoists to take advantage of the government’s rehabilitation policy and surrender with arms to avail financial assistance and other benefits. However, he cautioned that any attempt to escalate violence would invite a strong and decisive response from the state police.

“Maoist activities in Odisha are in their final stage. I am hopeful that Maoists will be completely wiped out from the state within the stipulated timeframe. A major operation is also underway in Kandhamal. The Maoists have only two options left — they must shun violence and surrender to join the mainstream,” the DGP said.
