Bhubaneswar: The Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital successfully conducted first liver transplant from a living donor which is first of its kind liver transplant conducted in Odisha. As per reports, the surgeons at the hospital with help from experts of Yashoda Hospital in Hyderabad conducted the surgery on a 55-year-old man Jayant Biswal from Balasore.

The patient was suffering from liver ailment for the past three years and his family was unable to bear the treatment cost in other cities of the country. However, the surgery could be successfully conducted after Biswal’s 19-year-old son donated a portion of his liver.

SUM hospital doctors informed that the surgery which began at 3 PM on Thursday was completed by 12 AM.

“The patient’s condition was very bad and he required a transplant on an urgent basis. His son agreed to donate a portion of his liver and then we decided to go ahead with the surgery as there was very less risk,” said Dr Manoj Sahoo.

Sahoo further informed that a liver transplant at any private set up in the country costs nearly Rs 20 to 30 lakh while a patient might have to pay Rs 15 to 20 lakh for the liver transplant at any government hospital in the country.

“The liver transplant was conducted free of cost and we are planning to focus on increasing the number of transplants here as already the State has seen cadaveric transplants in the recent past. We will also ensure that the cost of liver transplant is within the reach of the people,” Sahoo added.

Both Biswal and his son are recuperating in the ICU and their condition is stated to be stable.

“My husband was suffering from the liver ailment since 2016. Though we had visited several hospitals in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, we could not afford the transplant. We are happy that the doctors at SUM helped us a lot,” said Biswal’s wife.
