Students honour beloved teacher with grand, wedding-style farewell in Odisha's Malkangiri

What looked like a wedding procession complete with drums, fireworks, and dancing was in fact a farewell celebration for a beloved teacher in Odisha’s Malkangiri district. Students, both former and current, came together to honour Pratap Kumar Ray, who retired after 33 years of service as a teacher.

Ray began his teaching journey in 1993 at the Mahupadar Ashram School after being posted to Malkangiri. Over the decades, he served in several schools across the tribal region, shaping countless young minds through his commitment and compassion. On Saturday, he retired from Pangam High School, marking the end of a remarkable teaching career dedicated entirely to the upliftment of tribal children.

The farewell celebration was no ordinary event. Students carried out a grand procession, played traditional drums, and performed tribal dances in his honour. The entire event, from decorations to refreshments, was funded by the students themselves, who each contributed a small amount to express their gratitude.

What makes Ray’s story even more inspiring is his personal choice he never marry, considering his students as his own family. For decades, he nurtured, guided, and educated children from remote tribal areas, helping them dream of a better future.

For his students, this farewell was more than just a goodbye; it was a heartfelt tribute to a teacher who gave them knowledge, values, and a father’s love.
