Student unrest in Parala Maharaja Engineering College

Berhampur: Unrest surfaced at the Parala Maharaja Engineering College after a few students were allegedly beaten up by outsiders yesterday.

The students today staged a demonstration and locked up the main gate of the college protesting inaction by college administration in this regard.

Following protests, the college principal called for a meeting of the disciplinary committee and discussed ways to restore normalcy in college. The college authorities also held discussions with the Gopalpur Police Station officials about ways to stop outsiders from entering the college premises, informed sources.

“The committee members went to the spot yesterday to assess the situation. We have also held discussions with the Gopalpur Police Station officials. Investigation by the disciplinary committee is underway and we will take action soon,” said Ranjan Kumar Swain, Principal of Parala Maharaja Engineering College.

Yesterday night, some outsiders allegedly kidnapped a few students from the off-campus hostel and thrashed them. Later, they allegedly extorted Rs 10,000 from them too.

No police case has been registered in connection with the incident.

“They thrashed us repeatedly and demanded Rs 10,000 to let us go. They sent me to fetch the money and held my friend captive,” Rashmiranjan Behera, an injured student said.
