Southwest monsoon likely to retreat from Odisha in 3–4 days: IMD

The southwest monsoon is set to retreat from Odisha within 3–4 days, says IMD. While most areas will see dry weather, isolated districts may face thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rain. Alerts are in place for parts of southern and coastal Odisha.

The monsoon is preparing to withdraw from Odisha. Conditions are now fully favourable for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the State within the next three to four days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.

While no widespread heavy rainfall is expected across Odisha in the coming week, isolated places could still witness thunderstorms with lightning and heavy downpours.

Today, districts like Koraput and Malkangiri experienced thunderstorm activity accompanied by intense rainfall. Tomorrow, light to moderate rain is likely in parts of northern, coastal, and southern Odisha. However, the IMD has sounded a heavy rainfall alert for Kalahandi, Koraput, and Rayagada districts.

Winds during the rainfall activities may blow at speeds ranging from 30 to 40 kmph, possibly impacting outdoor movement and local travel.

Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions, especially in regions where thunderstorms and gusty winds are likely.

In its evening bulletin, the IMD regional centre in Bhubaneswar mentioned, “Conditions are favourable for further withdrawal of southwest monsoon from the remaining parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar; entire Jharkhand & Chhattisgarh and some parts of West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha & Telangana during next 3- 4 days.”

"The upper air cyclonic circulation over south Bangladesh & neighbourhood lay over south Bangladesh & adjoining north Bay of Bengal between 1.5 & 5.8 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over north Coastal Andhra Pradesh & neighbourhood at 0.9 km above mean sea level,” the IMD stated.

“Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at a few places over the districts of South Odisha and at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and dry weather is very likely to prevail over the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, and Deogarh,” the Meteorology Department predicted.

This prediction is valid from 0830 hrs IST of 11.10.2025 to 0830 hrs IST of 12.10.2025.

“Moreover, heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Kalahandi, Rayagada, and Koraput.
