In a startling development, police busted a major drug smuggling racket at Puri Railway Station, where an ingenious method was used to transport ganja. According to reports, the contraband was carefully stashed above train toilets, making it extremely difficult to detect. Initially, neither the GRP nor the RPF were able to notice the sophisticated setup.

A few days ago, police grew suspicious during one such smuggling attempt and launched a detailed investigation. This led to the arrest of two individuals, which in turn uncovered the full extent of the smuggling network.

Interrogation revealed that the accused were using screwdrivers to open train toilet rooftops to stash ganja. They also recreated the scene and showed how an agent communicated codes indicating which toilet contained the consignment. The contraband was allegedly smuggled to Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai, Delhi, Mumbai, Gujarat and Rajastan.

Outling the modus operandi, Santosh Bahinipati, senior officer, GRP said, ‘When the train departs the station, the crowd thins, and the smugglers target coaches with fewer passengers. Two people enter the toilet, and using a screwdriver, open the roof to stash the contraband. The accused then mark the stash, note the coach number, and send a photo to their master. Once the train reaches Delhi other members of the group board the train to retrieve the consignment. The gang buys ganja here for around Rs 1,200 per kg and sells it for Rs 7,000–8,000 per kg in Delhi, making this a significant source of income for them.”

Investigators said the network involved agents coordinating across stations to ensure smooth transport without detection.
