The Odisha government is set to expand its electric bus (EV Bus) network to six new cities in the coming days, the State Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, announced on Saturday.
At present, the state operates 670 buses, including 220 electric buses, across 113 routes covering 1,399 km. The minister said the newly procured electric buses will be deployed in cities with high public transport demand to ensure wider accessibility and enhance urban mobility.
The move is part of the government’s ongoing effort to promote sustainable transport and reduce carbon emissions in urban areas. Passengers using the online ticketing system have also benefited from enhanced services, with ticket revenue rising by 35% due to increased convenience and digital adoption.
Minister Mahapatra emphasised that the government will continue to monitor passenger demand and deploy additional buses as required to ensure efficient service. The expansion of the electric bus fleet is expected to make city travel cleaner, faster, and more economical for daily commuters.
