SIM box racket busted again in Bhubaneswar, two arrested Photograph: (OTV)
In a major crackdown on cyber fraud operations, the Commissionerate Police on Monday seized another SIM box from the state capital, Bhubaneswar. The illegal device was recovered from the jurisdiction of Chandrasekharpur Police Station following a targeted raid by the special squad of the Commissionerate Police.
Cyber Fraud
According to police sources, the raid was conducted after receiving credible intelligence that a SIM box was being operated in the area to facilitate fraudulent activities. The accused were allegedly using the device to convert international calls, particularly those originating from Middle Eastern countries, into local calls.
This method is commonly used by cybercriminals to mask the origin of calls and cheat unsuspecting victims by making the numbers appear domestic.
International Connection Suspected
Investigators revealed that similar operations had earlier been unearthed in the jurisdiction of Laxmisagar Police Station, where another SIM box was seized. Preliminary investigation in that case had traced links extending up to Ranchi. Officials now suspect that the larger network may have international connections, with possible links stretching to China.
Police have arrested two persons in connection with the latest seizure. Technical analysis of the seized equipment and interrogation of the accused are currently underway to ascertain the full extent of the racket. Authorities have indicated that further arrests may follow as the investigation progresses.
