At least six people were reportedly killed and several others injured after a Korba-bound passenger train collided with a stationary goods train near Bilaspur railway station on Tuesday, triggering panic and major disruption of rail services in the region.
According to preliminary reports, the accident occurred around 4 pm when a MEMU passenger train rammed into a stationary goods rake near Lalkhadan, just outside Bilaspur station limits in Chhattisgarh. The force of the collision caused multiple coaches to derail, severely damaging the tracks and trapping several passengers inside.
Rescue teams from the Railways, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local administration were immediately deployed to the spot to carry out evacuation and relief operations.
Dozens of injured passengers were pulled out from the mangled compartments and rushed to Bilaspur District Hospital and nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.

Senior railway officials, including top officers from the South East Central Railway (SECR), reached the site to supervise rescue efforts. Railway authorities confirmed that all necessary resources have been mobilised and that an inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident, which may have resulted from signal failure or human error.
“The MEMU train coach hit a goods train near Bilaspur station at about 16:00 hours. All measures are being ensured for the treatment of the injured,” the Railways said in a statement.
Train traffic on the affected section has been temporarily suspended, and restoration work is currently in progress.
