Senior BJP leader and former Korei MLA Sanchita Mohanty passes away in Bhubaneswar

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Korei MLA Sanchita Mohanty passed away at her residence in Bhubaneswar on Friday following a prolonged illness.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Korei MLA Sanchita Mohanty passed away at her residence in Bhubaneswar on Friday following a prolonged illness, party sources said. She was unwell for several months and had been undergoing medical treatment.

Mohanty’s demise marks the end of a significant political chapter in Jajpur district, where she remained an influential figure in the BJP for decades.

She represented the Korei Assembly constituency in Jajpur district from 2004 to 2009. During her tenure as a legislator, Mohanty was known for her active involvement in organisational work and close engagement with constituents.

Within the Jajpur unit of the BJP, she was regarded as one of the party’s prominent leaders and played a key role in strengthening the organisation at the grassroots level during its formative years in the district.

Long Association With BJP In Jajpur

Sources reported that Mohanty maintained a close association with the BJP’s organisational structure even after her term as an MLA ended. She continued to be involved in party activities and remained accessible to workers and local leaders. Her political career was closely tied to the expansion of the BJP’s base in Jajpur and surrounding areas during the early 2000s.

According to party sources, Mohanty had been undergoing treatment for age-related and other health complications. She breathed her last at her Bhubaneswar residence, where family members were present at the time.

Leaders Pay Respects

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi also visited the residence of late Sanchita Mohanty and paid his last respects, offering condolences to the bereaved family and praying for the peace of the departed soul. 

"We paid our last respects to the mortal remains of Sanchita Mohanty, our party's senior leader and former legislator from Korei. I convey my condolences to the bereaved family and pray to Lord Shri Jagannath for the peace of the departed soul," the CM said on social media.


BJP National Vice-President and Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda also expressed grief over her death, stating that he shared a long personal and political association with Mohanty and that the news of her demise was deeply distressing.

"I am deeply saddened and heartbroken to hear the news of the demise of Smt. Sanchita Mohanty, our party's senior woman leader and former legislator from Korei. I had a personal and political acquaintance with Sanchita Apa. While praying for the departed soul's attainment of eternal peace, I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family members," he wrote in a post on X.
