In line with this push, security operations in Odisha have been significantly intensified, leading to a surge in surrenders by Maoist cadres in recent months.

Despite these developments, Kandhamal district continues to remain a focus area for security forces, with several Maoist leaders still believed to be active in its dense forest regions.

Authorities say sustained operations and surrender appeals are being carried out simultaneously to restore normalcy in the region.

Southern Range Inspector General of Police Niti Shekhar said security forces have been assigned clear targets and are working systematically to eliminate Maoist presence.

“We have been given a target and we are working accordingly,” he said, adding that sustained efforts have already yielded results, with Boudh district now declared a Maoist-free zone.

He further stated that maoist Nikhil, who surrendered in Rayagada, along with his associates, was earlier active in Kandhamal as well, indicating the inter-district spread of Maoist activity.

Two Maoist divisions, Bansadhara-Ghumusar-Nagabali(BGN) and Kalahandi-Kandhamal-Boudh-Nayagarh(KKBN) had been operating in the region.

While the BGN division has surrendered, nearly 30 cadres belonging to the KKBN division are still active.

Authorities said all remaining cadres have been urged to surrender and join the mainstream.

Simultaneously, security operations are reportedly continuing across the forested areas of Kandhamal.

Police officials expressed confidence that with sustained pressure and surrender-driven rehabilitation efforts, Kandhamal too could be declared Maoist-free by the end of this month.
