A student of Sambalpur University was found dead under suspicious circumstances inside the Brahmaputra Hostel at Burla on Tuesday night, triggering shock and concern across the university campus. The deceased has been identified as Suraj Kujur, a second-year Economics student of the university.
He was a native of the Kutra area in Sundargarh district and was residing alone in Room No. 52 of the Brahmaputra Hostel. His body was found hanging inside the hostel room, following which the Burla police reached the spot and initiated an investigation.
Suraj was appearing for his university examinations, although he reportedly did not have any examination scheduled on Tuesday. The incident came to light late in the evening, after which university authorities and police officials rushed to the hostel.
Sambalpur University General Secretary Pradeep Nayak said he was informed about the incident by the hostel superintendent at around 8:53 pm. “I immediately informed the hostel warden and the Burla police. We reached the hostel soon after. As per police instructions, the student’s parents were also informed, and necessary procedures are currently underway,” he said.
