The paddy procurement situation in Odisha's Sambalpur continues to deteriorate, with the Kharif season procurement yet to gain stability. On Saturday, the Supply Department facilitated paddy collection at the mandi, raising hopes that the ongoing uncertainty would ease. However, the situation took a turn when paddy-laden vehicles reached the designated mill, where millers refused to accept the stock and barred entry into the premises.
According to reports, the deadlock persisted until evening. As frustration mounted, farmers assembled at night and staged a protest over the delay and non-acceptance of their produce. Senior officials, including the District Chief Supply Officer and police personnel, reached the spot and held discussions with stakeholders. A temporary resolution was eventually reached, allowing the vehicles to enter the mill. Farmers, however, expressed anger after waiting for hours with paddy-loaded tractors, adding that they had to bear additional expenses for paying tractor drivers.
Millers’ Stand and Earlier Developments
Despite efforts by the Supplies Department and police to defuse the situation, millers maintained their reluctance to receive the stock. They reportedly stated that they would accept paddy only for the day and would halt intake from Monday unless their demands were met.
This standoff follows a press conference held earlier by the All Odisha Millers Association in Sambalpur. The association announced that millers would not renew their agreements, pay the required security deposit, or participate in the procurement process until their demands were addressed, sources said.
Farmers Express Discontent
Farmers in Sambalpur, who typically harvest paddy earlier than other regions, completed harvesting nearly two weeks ago. With procurement still unstable, they voiced deep frustration, highlighting that their produce was not being accepted at the mills. Many raised concerns about potential crop damage if rain occurs.

Farmers stressed that their expectation was simple: they should be able to bring paddy to the mill, sell it, and return to their fields to continue harvesting without unnecessary delays. They warned that continued disruptions would severely affect their livelihood and crop quality.
