The shocking ‘corruption’ has come under scanner and now will be audited following a directive issued by Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia. The minister has ordered a special audit into both the procurement process and the Rs 5 crore expenditure incurred on modifications.

According to official sources, the entire process, from the purchase of the vehicles to their renovation and modification, will be examined. The minister has instructed that the special audit be conducted by the office of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF).

During the 2024–25 financial year, the Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department purchased 51 Mahindra Thar vehicles at a total cost of Rs 7 crore, with each vehicle priced at Rs 14 lakh. However, an additional Rs 5.02 crore was later spent on renovating and modifying the vehicles.

The substantial expenditure on vehicle modifications sparked controversy, raising questions over the necessity and justification of the costs. In the wake of the criticism, the state government has decided to initiate a detailed audit to ensure transparency and accountability.

Further action, officials said, will be taken based on the findings of the audit report.
