Rourkela airport, steel plant expansion soon: Odisha CM Mohan Majhi

The expansion of the Rourkela Airport will be undertaken in the near future, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi announced on Wednesday during his visit to the city. 

Alongside the airport upgrade, the expansion of the Rourkela Steel Plant will also be carried out as part of a broader development push for the region.

The Chief Minister said coordinated efforts are underway involving both the State and Central Governments to ensure timely execution of the proposed projects. The initiatives aim to strengthen infrastructure and boost industrial growth in and around Rourkela.

Task Force Formed, Centre Coordination Underway

CM Mohan Majhi said, “The people of Rourkela had been demanding a larger airport and the expansion of the Rourkela Steel Plant for a long time. After our government came to power, we personally held discussions with senior officials of RSP and other authorities at the central level.”

He further added that officials from the Centre had also visited to carry out a detailed inspection of RSP, and a review meeting was conducted in Bhubaneswar in his presence along with leaders of the Odisha government. He stated that a task force had been formed and that teams under Development Commissioner Deo Ranjan Singh had visited nearly three times. According to him, discussions were ongoing and everything was positive as of now.

As part of the airport development plan, the Rourkela Airport is proposed to be upgraded to Category-C. The move is expected to enhance aviation infrastructure and improve connectivity for the region.

Steel Plant Development Also on Agenda

Emphasising that development efforts are not limited to aviation infrastructure, Chief Minister Majhi stated that the Rourkela Steel Plant will also undergo expansion and development. He reiterated that both the State and Central Governments are actively working together to take the projects forward.

The announcements underline the government’s focus on integrated development, combining infrastructure upgrades with industrial expansion to support long-term growth in Rourkela.
