Pushpuni is the last among the five major festivals observed by farmers, symbolising the culmination of a year-long cycle of hard work in the fields. After months of labour, farmers bring their harvested crops home during the month of Pausha and traditionally celebrate the occasion with feasts and community gatherings.

However, the festive spirit has been dampened for many farmers in Bolangir district, where problems continue to plague paddy procurement at mandis. Instead of celebration, farmers are facing uncertainty and frustration as they struggle to sell their produce.

At several procurement centres, farmers alleged that there are no clear procurement targets, while at others, issues related to token distribution have created confusion and tension. Many farmers claimed they have been waiting for days but are still unable to sell their paddy, forcing them to return home disappointed.

The situation has left farmers distressed during a time meant for celebration and gratitude. Several farmer representatives urged the administration to intervene immediately and streamline the procurement process to ensure that cultivators are not deprived of their rightful earnings.
