Protest in Bhadrak over demand for passenger trains on Dhamara rail route
Residents of Bhadrak district have once again intensified their demand for the introduction of passenger train services on the Bhadrak–Dhamara railway route. In support of the demand, members of the Bhadrak Dhamara Rail Sanghram Samiti staged a protest in front of the Bhadrak District Collector’s office.
Freight Trains Running, Passenger Services Still Absent
The protesters pointed out that while freight trains are operating regularly on the route, passenger train services are yet to be introduced, causing significant inconvenience to local residents, students, and workers who rely on affordable public transport. They said the absence of passenger services has continued for years despite repeated representations.
Farmers’ Sacrifice Highlighted
The agitators said the railway line was constructed after farmers in the region sacrificed large portions of their fertile agricultural land. However, they alleged that the local population has not received the expected benefits in return. The protesters urged the Railway authorities and the state government to take immediate steps to commence passenger train services on the route.
Bhadrak Dhamara Rail Sangram Samiti president Bikash Nath said nearly 1,000 acres of fertile land were given up by farmers around 25 years ago at a very low price. “We never demanded anything in return. Our only expectation was the introduction of a passenger train service for the people of this area. Since that has not happened, we are now forced to raise our demand,” he said.

Warning of Intensified Agitation
The Committee warned that if their demand continues to be ignored, the agitation will be intensified in the coming days. Meanwhile, the district administration has assured the protesters that their concerns will be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.
