Pregnant woman carried in sling: An incident a day mocks health schemes of Odisha
Malkangiri: Highlighting the poor rural infrastructure and healthcare in Odisha, a pregnant woman was carried in a sling for nearly five kms after an ambulance failed to reach her village due to lack of motorable road. The incident was reported from Lachhamipur village under Gunthabeda panchayat in Malkangiri district today.
As per reports, a woman of the village complained of labour pain early morning today and her family members called an ambulance. But due to lack of any proper road to the village, the ambulance could not reach her.
With the help of an ASHA worker and driver of the ambulance, family members of the woman carried her for five kms up to Kanchrapara village where the ambulance was waiting for her.
“It was not possible to bring the woman in the ambulance from her home due to bad road condition. The Kanchrapara ASHA worker helped us to reach the village of the pregnant woman who was in pain. I along with ASHA worker and the woman’s family members carried the pregnant woman in the sling and covered five kms to reach the ambulance,” said Pradeep Mandal, driver of the ambulance.
“As the driver was ignorant of the route, I went with the ambulance staff to Lachhamipur village and carried the pregnant woman in a sling,” stated Biraji Khilo, an ASHA worker.
Later, the woman was admitted to the Chitrakonda hospital and her condition is stated to be stable, sources said.
