In a significant development in the much-discussed Shubhamitra murder case, police have taken the prime accused Deepak Rout on one-day remand. The remand has been granted to the Khuntuni police, who will further interrogate the accused in connection with the case.
During the remand period, police are expected to conduct an in-depth probe into the death of Deepak Rout’s first wife, Aparna Priyadarshini, which was earlier reported as an accident. Investigators suspect that Aparna’s death may not have been accidental, and fresh revelations are likely during the interrogation.
Police sources said that if required, a lie detection test may also be conducted on Deepak Rout as part of the investigation.
Deepak Rout is the main accused in the Shubhamitra murder case. According to records, on March 17, 2002, Aparna Priyadarshini was travelling by car from Dhenkanal to Bhubaneswar when she reportedly met with an accident at Radhakishorepur under Khuntuni police station limits. At the time, Deepak had informed the police that Aparna died due to the accident.
However, Aparna’s family later alleged that her death was a case of murder and not an accident, prompting renewed investigation. Following these allegations, even the then investigating officer and the Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) were brought under the ambit of the probe.
