According to preliminary information, the heavy-duty machine lost balance while being used for unauthorised stone transport and plunged from the hill. The driver sustained critical injuries in the mishap and was battling for his life at the time of reporting. The Poclain machine was severely damaged after being crushed under falling stones at the quarry site.

Restrictions in Place, Illegal Activity Continues

The incident has raised serious concerns as restrictions were already in force at the Bagudi Khanjamahal quarry. Earlier, Balasore District Collector Suryawanshi Mayur Vikas, along with officials from the mining and revenue departments and the police, had imposed Section 163 at the site to curb illegal quarrying and transportation.

A police camp had also been set up in the area to prevent unlawful activities. However, reports suggest that illegal stone mining and transportation continued despite these measures.

Questions Over Enforcement and Safety

Sources alleged that the stone mafia operating in the area has been flouting repeated warnings and enforcement efforts by the district administration. The latest accident, which reportedly occurred during illegal operations, has once again highlighted the safety risks associated with unauthorised quarrying.
