Panic spread in Kamakhyanagar of Odisha's Dhenkanal district after some residents claimed to have spotted a tiger near the Kankadahad Public Works Department road close to Bhalumunda. The sighting has triggered fear among villagers, especially those living near forested areas.

According to reports, some villagers who were collecting firewood in the forest were left terrified after coming face-to-face with the tiger. Startled by the sight, they screamed in fear, drawing the attention of nearby picnickers who rushed to the spot and began making loud noises. The tiger, which was reportedly trying to cross the road, retreated into the nearby forest area after seeing the crowd and waited for the commotion to subside before moving further.

Forest Department Steps In To Track Movement

The spectators immediately informed the Forest Department. By the time officials reached the spot, the tiger had moved deeper into the forest. The team, however, found and examined pugmarks in the area and is currently monitoring the movement of the animal.

Unconfirmed Reports On Big Cat Identity

While Forest Department officials are yet to issue an official statement, they suspect the pugmarks may belong to a Royal Bengal Tiger (RBT). However, they have refrained from confirming this publicly, citing concerns that an announcement could create unnecessary panic among locals. Officials have also indicated that the pugmarks could belong to a leopard or another large animal.

Due to recent rainfall, however, the pugmarks could not be clearly verified, and officials are continuing their investigation to confirm the species.

Earlier Sighting Raises Concern

Earlier, a tiger had reportedly hunted a cow in Madarangamunda village under the Mahabirod range, not far from the current location. Recent pugmark sightings in nearby areas were also suspected to belong to an RBT.

Villagers have been warned to avoid entering the forest and to keep a close watch over their livestock, including cows and goats. Patrols and monitoring efforts are ongoing to safeguard both residents and animals in the area.
