The paddy procurement process is to begin in Odisha from today, with the Odisha Government setting a higher procurement target compared to last year. Special arrangements have been made for farmers at mandis, where facilities such as food, drinking water and toilets have been put in place.

According to reports, strict instructions have been issued to mill owners to ensure the timely arrival of vehicles. Officials were directed to maintain close supervision over procurement activities and resolve any issues immediately once the mandis open. The state government stated that it is keeping a strict watch on weighing and cleaning procedures.

There may be minor losses in the event of rainfall caused by a low-pressure system. However, the government is prepared to manage such situations, said the Cooperation Department Minister.

Pradeep Bal Samanta, Co-operation Department Minister, said, “It is being estimated that the target would be nearly 15 lakh tonnes more than last year. Food and toilet facilities have been arranged for the farmers, and mill owners were also advised to avoid delays. We are ensuring that everything is done smoothly. Government does not agree with katni-chatni, but if the mill owners and farmers make a deal personally, then we cannot do anything related to that.”

Opposition Criticises Government

Political tensions emerged over the paddy procurement process, with BJD and Congress criticising the government.

Arun Sahoo, BJD MLA, said, “Many farmers were excluded from the registration, and the current government has not taken any steps to resolve that issue. The reason behind this is that the paddy that was procured last year was not bought by the Centre. When the godowns do not have space, where will the paddy be placed? If it is placed under open sky, then farmers will suffer due to low-pressure and cyclonic conditions.”

Congress MLA Rama Chandra Kadam said, “Only if the government takes steps keeping the farmers’ benefits in mind, it would be beneficial for the farmers. It needs to be implemented in action, and the government should take steps to stop katni-chatni, as it is still going on and will continue further. The current government does not implement what they claim to do on time.”
