In a significant development, Berhampur police on Sunday filed an extensive chargesheet running into more than 30,000 pages in connection with the murder case of BJP leader and senior lawyer Pitabas Panda.

The chargesheet, comprising an unusually large number of pages, was filed today despite it being a holiday.

The filing of the chargesheet marks a major step forward in the investigation into the high-profile murder case that had sent shockwaves across the region. Investigators said the filing of the chargesheet will mark a crucial stage in the probe, paving the way for the commencement of trial proceedings.

Panda was brutally murdered on October 6 last year. Following the incident, the police launched a detailed investigation, collecting voluminous documentary, technical and forensic evidence, which has now been compiled into the massive charge sheet submitted before the court.

So far, a total of 16 accused have been arrested in the case. Among those taken into custody is former MLA Bikram Panda, whose alleged involvement has added significant political attention to the case.

As per sources, the charge sheet includes statements of witnesses, call detail records, forensic reports and other crucial evidence aimed at establishing the conspiracy and execution of the crime. Further legal proceedings in the case are expected to continue based on the materials submitted to the court.

The charge sheet was prepared after months of sustained investigation involving several teams.
