Incidents of mobile phone theft were reported at the ongoing Sisir Saras Mela in the Odisha capital, Bhubaneswar, with more than 20 complaints lodged at Kharvelnagar police station on Saturday night.
According to police, several visitors reported that their mobile phones were stolen from their bags and purses amid heavy crowding at the fair. Following the complaints, police registered FIRs and launched an investigation into the incidents.
As part of the probe, two persons have been detained on suspicion and are being questioned to ascertain their involvement in the thefts.
Visitors Recount Theft Incidents
One visitor to the Sisir Saras Mela said she had kept her mobile phone inside her purse, which was securely zipped and held close. “I realised someone had slipped a hand into my purse, and by the time I turned around, the person had disappeared into the crowd with my phone. Within about one-and-a-half hours, nearly 25 people reported similar thefts, suggesting an organised gang operating inside the fair,” she said.
Another complainant alleged that despite taking precautions, her phone was stolen soon after entering the fair. “I usually carry my purse in front for safety. However, just after entering the gate and before moving even 100 metres inside, I noticed my bag felt lighter. When I checked, the chain was open and both my phones were missing,” she said.
She further claimed that when she approached the control room for assistance, she was informed that no public announcements could be made as a minister’s programme was underway and was advised to lodge a complaint at the police station.
The complainant also said that while heading to the police station, she noticed a crowd had gathered after a woman allegedly caught a girl suspected of stealing cash and a mobile phone. “A phone was recovered from the purse the girl was carrying,” she added.
