Chilika Lake has recorded the arrival of over 11 lakh birds this year, marking a significant rise in its annual migratory bird population. According to the latest census, a total of 11,32,200 birds belonging to 196 species were counted across the lake, reflecting an increase of 4,982 birds compared to last year.
Of the total count, migratory birds accounted for 11,10,257 individuals representing 106 species, while resident birds numbered 21,943. Among the visiting species, flamingos drew particular attention, with 1,800 individuals recorded during the survey.
Nalaban Emerges as Key Habitat
Nalaban, one of Chilika’s most important bird habitats, recorded the presence of 3,97,587 birds belonging to 106 species. Officials said the high concentration of birds in the area once again underlined Nalaban’s significance as a critical wintering and feeding ground within the lake ecosystem.
Extensive Counting Exercise Conducted
The bird census began early in the morning and covered key locations including Chilika, Balugan, Tangi, Satapada, and Rambha. For systematic monitoring, the lake was divided into 22 zones. Around 130 personnel, including forest officials, wildlife experts, and volunteers, were deployed to carry out the counting exercise, ensuring accuracy and comprehensive coverage.

Positive Indicator for Conservation Efforts
Experts said the rise in bird numbers reflects the improving ecological health of Chilika Lake and reinforces its importance as a vital habitat for both migratory and resident species. The data collected during the census will assist authorities in tracking species trends, planning conservation strategies, and safeguarding the wetland’s biodiversity.
The latest figures once again reaffirm Chilika Lake’s status as one of India’s premier bird sanctuaries and a crucial winter refuge for migratory birds arriving from across the world.
