OTV correspondent Ramakant Mahanand’s death:  Odisha CM Mohan Majhi announces Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia

After the untimely demise of OTV correspondent Ramakant Mahanand of Rairakhol, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep grief and announced assistance for the bereaved family. As a mark of condolence and support, the Odisha Chief Minister declared an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh.

Death in Road Accident

OTV’s Rairakhol correspondent Ramakant Mahanand lost his life in a road accident near Naktideul in Sambalpur on Monday (8th December). The news of his demise was formally confirmed by the Superintendent of VIMSAR, plunging the region as well as the journalistic fraternity across Odisha into deep grief.

His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the journalistic fraternity and the local community, where he was known for his professional commitment.

According to reports, Ramakant was on his way to Naktideul to cover a grievance-related programme of the Collector when the tragedy struck. His motorcycle reportedly collided with a culvert, leading to severe injuries.

Meanwhile, his brother Umakanta claimed that Ramakant’s death, reported as a road accident on Monday morning, was in fact an intentional killing carried out by miscreants due to his journalistic work.

In his written complaint, Umakanta stated that his younger brother Ramakanta left home around 9:30 am to gather news near Naktideul. According to the allegation, unidentified miscreants murdered him and then deliberately staged the scene to make it appear as a road accident before fleeing.

The Chief Minister’s gesture reflects the government’s recognition of the contributions made by journalists and its commitment to stand by their families in times of tragedy. The announcement has been widely welcomed as a humane and timely intervention.

Beyond journalism, Ramakant was known for his warm personality and strong interpersonal relationships. He was not only an affable individual but also someone with a profound interest in literature, which added depth and sensitivity to his professional approach.
