One person was critically injured, and several properties were damaged in a gas cylinder explosion triggered by a suspected leak in Borigaon under Nimakhandi police station limits in Berhampur on Monday night.
The incident occurred around 10.30 pm at the residence of Prafulla Raul, a ward member, in Bada Bandha Sahi area of Borigaon. Raul, who was reportedly alone at home, had gone to cook when the gas cylinder suddenly exploded, triggering a major fire and causing extensive structural damage.
Houses Damaged in Powerful Blast
The impact of the explosion was severe, completely destroying Raul’s house and damaging four neighbouring houses. Cracks developed on the walls of the adjacent houses due to the force of the blast. All household belongings, including electronic items, were destroyed in the fire.
Neighbours said they were startled by the loud explosion and rushed to the spot after realising that the blast had occurred at Raul’s residence. They found him in critical condition inside the house.
Rescue and Medical Treatment
Fire services personnel were alerted soon after the incident and rushed to the scene. They managed to bring the blaze under control and rescued the injured ward member nearly half an hour later. Raul was immediately shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for serious injuries at the time of reporting.
Preliminary Cause and Official Response
Preliminary reports suggest that the fire originated from the gas regulator and that a leak from the gas cylinder may have caused the explosion. Police personnel and Tata Power officials were also informed and reached the spot to assess the situation and ensure safety in the area.
