At least four persons were injured, one of them critically, in a group clash that broke out at a village square in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Friday evening, police said.

The incident occurred at the main square of Phashi village under the Kodala police station limits, briefly triggering tension in the area. According to preliminary information, more than eight persons from a neighbouring village allegedly arrived at Phashi and were involved in the clash, which is believed to have stemmed from an old rivalry.

Police sources said a group allegedly entered the village and attacked a father and his two sons with sharp weapons, following which the situation escalated into retaliatory attacks from both sides.

In the incident, Rajesh Kumar Palai of Phashi village sustained critical injuries, while his elder brother Rakesh Kumar Palai and their father Bhabagrahi Palai were also injured. Another person sustained injuries during the clash, taking the total number of injured to four.

All the injured were initially taken to the Kodala Community Health Centre, where they were provided primary treatment. Due to the severity of their injuries, doctors later referred all four to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for advanced medical care.

Police personnel from Kodala police station rushed to the spot soon after receiving information and brought the situation under control. A preliminary inquiry has been launched to ascertain the sequence of events and identify those involved in the violence. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation, police added.
