Odisha has etched its name in the global record books with a remarkable display of traditional craftsmanship, as its terracotta artisans secured twin world records at the “Bhabya Terracotta Kruti Prastuti” competition organised by the Department of Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts.

The event, held at Kalabhoomi in Bhubaneswar, saw participation from hundreds of skilled artisans from across the state. In a stunning showcase of speed and precision, seven master craftsmen broke previous benchmarks and set new global records in terracotta artistry, earning recognition from the World Book of Records.

Sebak Rana of Bargarh emerged as the standout performer, crafting 310 terracotta glasses within one hour to establish a new world record. Other artisans also delivered exceptional performances. Madhab Muduli of Nayagarh, Than Sundar Rana of Bolangir, Ramesh Chandra Muduli of Balasore, Bijay Behera of Angul, Basanta Rana of Bolangir, and Makar Ketan Sahu of Kendrapara produced 248, 232, 230, 227, 219, and 218 terracotta utensils, respectively, within the stipulated time, each setting new records in their respective categories.

In another major milestone, more than 1,000 clay artists participated simultaneously in the event, creating a separate record for the highest number of participants in a single terracotta craft competition.

Officials termed the achievement a proud moment for Odisha’s rich handicraft heritage, noting that the global recognition underscores the skill of local artisans and further strengthens the state’s position on the international handicrafts map.
