Tension flared at Kherang market over an alleged vehicle collision involving the local Sarpanch. The incident occurred under Chandbali block in Bhadrak district on Wednesday, where several women staged a road blockade by burning tyres, demanding action in connection with the dispute.

According to sources, a dispute broke out over a vehicle side collision on 17th February. It was alleged that Kherang Panchayat Sarpanch Jitendra Biswal, while driving his vehicle, hit some local youths. Following the incident, an argument ensued between the Sarpanch and the youths. The Sarpanch later lodged a complaint at the police station. Based on the complaint, local police arrested one youth.

Locals Demand Sarpanch’s Arrest

Protesting the arrest of the youth, locals staged a road blockade demanding the arrest of the Sarpanch. They stated that the blockade would continue until the Sarpanch is taken into custody.

“A case has been registered against the Sarpanch, but instead of arresting him, the Superintendent of Police and the IIC arrested two other persons. We will continue our protest. We had stopped the consumption and sale of alcohol in the area, but he comes here, collects money from drunkards and is involved in the black marketing of liquor,” alleged protester Pratima Majhi.

Situation Remains Tense

The situation continues to remain tense in the area, with protesters standing firm on their demands. As the agitation persists, all eyes are now on the local administration and police to address the allegations and restore normalcy at the earliest.
