In a world where abandoned and ailing animals are often left to suffer on the streets, one woman from Odisha has chosen compassion over comfort. Purabi Patra, a highly educated professional, walked away from a lucrative job to dedicate her life to rescuing injured, abandoned and ageing animals, giving them shelter, treatment and, above all, dignity.
Guided by the Indian cultural principle of ‘Jibe Daya’ (kindness towards all living beings), Purabi has become a lifeline for countless dogs, cows, cats and birds that would otherwise have died uncared for. Whether it's an accident victim lying on the roadside or an aged pet dumped by its owner, Purabi steps in without hesitation.
A Haven For Creatures That Society Often Ignores!
Her animal care shelter at Pingapada village, under Kantapara block in Cuttack district, built with limited resources and immense love, has become a haven for creatures that society often overlooks. Here, animals receive food, medical care and emotional comfort, many for the first time in their lives.
What makes Purabi’s journey remarkable is the choice she made. Despite being well-qualified and holding a promising job, she felt her true calling belonged elsewhere. The repeated sight of suffering animals on the roads pulled her away from corporate life and into full-time animal rescue.
“You can see dogs of different breeds here. They came in different, horrible conditions here. Someone was abandoned, someone I rescued from Chandaka sanctuary, and someone was just abandoned on the middle of the road. We are taking care of all the rescued animals here,” said Purabi.
Financial Constraints, Lack of Manpower Challenges for Purabi
Purabi says she spends her days attending distress calls, transporting injured animals to safety and nursing them back to health. Financial constraints and lack of manpower remain constant challenges, but her determination has never wavered. She believes that every animal deserves compassion, and every act of rescue is an act of humanity.
From lifting badly injured street dogs into her vehicle to helping abandoned, old cows walk again, Purabi’s work reflects the deeper values of Odisha’s cultural teachings. Her efforts remind society that kindness is not an abstract idea, it is a responsibility.
Purabi Patra’s mission is driven purely by empathy. And in an age where many animals are discarded as burdens, her service towards those who cannot speak for themselves, stands as a testament to what one person can achieve through unwavering love and courage.
