Kendrapara: More than a week after the Parliament passed a bill against Triple Talaq, a woman from Muslim community in the district today filed a police complaint against her husband for allegedly divorcing her by uttering Triple Talaq over phone.

The complainant said she lodged the FIR at Pattamundai police station after her husband pronounced ‘talaq’ thrice over phone and divorced her. She further alleged, “During pregnancy, my husband asked me to stay at my paternal home. But after the delivery, when I called up my husband and sought permission to go back to the in-laws place, much to the surprise, my husband told me over phone that he did not know me and uttered triple talaq. That’s why I have lodged a complaint at the Pattamundai police station against him.”

Cases of violation of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, which criminalises the triple talaq, have been reported from different parts of the country in recent past despite a ban. As per Section 4 of the new act passed by the Parliament on July 30, a Muslim man is subjected to imprisonment up to three years and fine if he pronounces triple talaq.
