The Odisha Government will introduce an ‘improvement examination’ for Plus II students on the pattern followed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The new system will allow students to improve their marks in a subject even after appearing for the Class 12 board examination, official sources said on Monday.

Under the new provision, starting this year, a student can reappear in one subject if they wish to improve their score. The examination and the results of the improvement test will be completed within two months after the main examination results are declared by the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), Odisha.

Officials say the move will help meritorious students who need better scores for admission to institutions such as Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and competitive programmes.

In an exclusive interview with OTV, the CHSE Controller of Examinations has said that if a student scores lower marks in the improvement test than in the original exam, the higher marks obtained earlier will remain valid.

However, the opportunity will only be available to students who have passed the main examination. Those who have failed in the board exam will not be eligible to appear for the improvement test.

The initiative is expected to provide the students with a fair opportunity to enhance their academic performance and improve their chances of pursuing higher education.

“Examination Committee has approved that if any student wishes to improve their score in any single subject, for any reason, they can take the exam for that one subject. We are implementing this immediately this year. Students who are currently taking the exam, and those who become instantly eligible, will take it in one subject. So, those who will take the improvement exam will also sit for that same exam in any one subject, a month later,” the CHSE Controller of Examinations, Prasanta Kumar Parida, said.

“This will prove very beneficial for the children. For those children who have performed poorly in one subject for any reason, but have passed in all other subjects, there is no problem in giving them an opportunity in that particular subject. This is appropriate, and a child should also get a chance. By taking an improvement, they will be able to score good marks and pass. There is no difficulty in this. I welcome this step,” eminent educationist, Kamala Prasad Mahapatra, expressed when contacted.
