In a major New Year outreach for the economically weaker sections, the Odisha Panchayati Raj Department has announced that pucca houses will be distributed to around 10 lakh beneficiaries in January.
The announcement was made by Panchayati Raj Minister Rabi Naik, who said the initiative aims to provide secure housing to the poor under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).
Addressing the media, the Minister said the large-scale distribution of houses would serve as a New Year gift for the underprivileged families across the state. He informed that as many as 37 lakh beneficiaries had applied for housing assistance under PMAY. Out of these, around 34 lakh applicants have already been shortlisted after the verification process.
The shortlisted beneficiary list has been submitted to the Central government for approval, the minister said, adding that the state government is working closely with the Centre to expedite the process. Once approved, the beneficiaries will be able to avail financial assistance for the construction of pucca houses.
