A student from Chandbali in Bhadrak district has developed an innovative ‘smart helmet’ designed to prevent road accidents by enforcing safety at the very first step of riding a two-wheeler. The concept is simple: if the rider does not wear the helmet, the vehicle will not start.

Additionally, if the system detects alcohol consumption, the engine will refuse to activate, ensuring complete safety compliance.
The prototype was showcased at a science exhibition on Thursday, where it quickly drew major attention for its unique and practical application. The smart helmet integrates sensors that relay signals to the vehicle’s ignition system.
When the helmet is properly worn, the sensor allows the engine to start. A separate alcohol sensor checks if the rider is intoxicated; if detected, it prevents the vehicle from moving.
The ambitious project, now much discussed under the name ‘SmartMate’, highlights how student-driven innovations can contribute significantly to road safety. A demonstration of the assembly process and working mechanism was presented at the event.
“We usually meet with accidents when we drive a vehicle without wearing a helmet or after consuming alcohol. Electrical circuits in the ‘smart helmet’ will get disconnected if the headgear is not worn. I have done this project, which will help prevent accidents, and lives can be saved,” the Class 5 student, Chinmaya Prasad Sahoo, said.
“Ultrasound sensors have been used in this project to prevent a vehicle from igniting. We have also used a relay, a switch, a motor, and wheels. We had searched for ideas on YouTube and read some books to make this project,” Chinmaya’s father stated.
Worth mentioning, in the past five years, before March 2025, the State had witnessed an annual average of 11,366 road accidents, injuring nearly 10,008 people and claiming around 5,433 lives. At least 15 people die every day due to road accidents in Odisha.
