The biting cold has led to a noticeable decline in early morning activities, as dense fog and icy winds have gripped several regions.

Kandhamal’s Phulbani, one of the coldest zones in the state, experienced a minimum temperature of 8.2°C, leaving residents wrapped in layers. The cold wave has also tightened its hold on at least 10 major towns, where the minimum temperature fell below 12°C, signaling a widespread and severe winter onset across interior as well as coastal Odisha.

Even the usually warmer twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack were not spared, as both recorded a temperature of 14.8°C, dipping below the 15-degree mark for the first time this season. The chill was accompanied by dry and cold northwesterly winds, adding to the discomfort of commuters and outdoor workers.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cautionary advisory stating that the cold wave conditions are expected to persist for at least the next two weeks. Officials have urged people, especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues, to take necessary precautions as the drop in temperature could pose health risks.

With winter arriving earlier and harsher than expected, residents across Odisha are bracing for prolonged cold conditions in the days ahead.
