Bhubaneswar: Lending helping hands to flood-ravaged Kerala, the State Government on Wednesday dispatched 500 metric tonnes of polythene sheets for assistance of people hit by the natural calamity.

The Polythene sheets were sent in as many as 12 wagons of a special goods train from Dhanamandal railway station in Jajpur.

The state government had earlier announced to give polythene sheets worth around Rs 8 crore for assistance of the flood-hit victims. Odisha has already donated financial assistance of Rs 10 crore.

"We were able to send the consignment with the support of district administration, fire services personnel, railway officials and labourers. The polythene sheets will reach Kerala in two to three days, said Labour union leader Suvendu Kumar Das.

Earlier on Wednesday, hundreds of Odias stranded in the southern state due to floods, returned to Odisha in a special train.
